PVP Combat Returns to Runescape

October 27th 2008 05:34
Less than a year ago, in an effort to combat real life trading of virtual currency and items, Runescape, one of the largest MMOG's eliminated Player V. Player combat. Needless to say, many combat junkies were not happy with that decision.

The trouble was caused by gold farmers who would take advantage of the "loot" system to transfer wealth to their buyers by staging a fake fight and losing.

Runescape death

Jagex, the makers of Runescape, have tried several different times to re-introduce PvP or PKing to the game. They designed several mini-games based on combat, where players or teams played against other players. But they were a bit too fomatted, and of course, if you don't get to collect loot from the other players that you kill, then what is the point?

Finally, Jagex seems to have come up with their solution. In the new PvP, dead players drop their items, but only a certain amount of these items can be collected by the winner. By calculating the amount of time the winner has spent in dangerous areas, how many times he has beaten opponents (or taken a beating), and incorporating the amount of wealth that player is risking . . . Jagex thinks they have this thing solved, and PvP has come back.

It's back and better than ever. Instead of being confined to certain "dangerous" areas, PvP is now confined to certain "dangerous" worlds (servers). The result is that the slaughter is now available all across the map, and the safe spots are few and far between.

Near chaos can break out, in towns like Lumby and Fally that are usually quiet. Teleport spots are particularly dangerous, as you can see in this video by d3filed.

I myself have had my share of PvP adventures. I'll admit, combat is not my strong point. But I am a Rich Noob, and I have great stats and lots of cool weapons and armour. Most of which ends up in the hands of my opponents when someone smokes me. I can hit pretty hard, but sadly, I lack the go for the throat intensity and attention span. So far my wins have included several rune plates, and magic bows, and hundreds of arrows and knives. Nothing to compare with my losses, full Karil's, Green Dragonhide Coif from FOG, and my leaf bladed sword. One of my big losses was after I had successfully escaped from combat by teleing to my home . . . then I teled to Ardy without healing, and got nailed at the tele point.

This video shows how the pros do it.

Ahhh, but the thrill of the hunt calls, and I will return. If nothing else, I can sneak out without any valuables and scavenge arrows off the ground, until I wake up naked in Lumby with no idea how I got there.

See you next time!
