Romans, Teutons and Gauls, Oh My!

I love Travian. From the first moment it had me captivated. Maybe it is the simple browser interface. Maybe it is the Level 4 English, such as the "Welcome at Travian" banner. Or maybe it's just the fact that so far no Teutons have tried to wipe me off the map.
Travian is a browser game combining time management, constructing villages, and training troops. It is a loosely based "civilization" game, with players chosing to be one of three different ancient cultures, Roman, Gaul or Teuton. Each has a few skills and bennies over the others.
Your village is dropped on a map, and you have to start building it up. You have to take into consideration how fast to expand your resources tiles and new buildings. After a short period, other villages will be able to attack you as well, and kill your troops and loot your resources.
The beginners trick is to use your resources as soon as you have them (to expand) so that attackers don't gain anything. That has bought me enough time to expand and grow . . . but I'm clueless about combat (as usual!!). I've smoked up a few defensive troops, but I'm worried about how many crops my soldiers will be eating.
This game has a weird timeframe, you can't spend much time on it in the beginning. Each expansion is only a click, and there are only about 10 other pages to check into. but you do need to show up often to keep an eye on your village. Three days away from the game is considered bad form, and you can get picked on pretty bad.
I originally clicked on Travian from an ad on New York Times. It seems like they are pushing hard for more players. They have a forum and FAQ/manual for more information on gameplay and strategy.
Good luck, and Cranny up.
